Today the Deepwater Horizon incident declared a Spill of National Significance (SONS). A SONS is defined as, "a spill that, due to its severity, size, location, actual or potential impact on the public health and welfare or the environment, or the necessary response effort, is so complex that it requires extraordinary coordination of federal, state, local, and responsible party resources to contain and clean up the discharge" and allows greater federal involvement. New York Times: Greek Debt Rating Cut to 'Junk' Status
FRANKFURT — Greece’s credit rating was lowered to junk status Tuesday by a leading credit agency, a decision that rocked financial markets and deepened fears that a debt crisis in Europe could spiral out of control. 
The ratings agency, Standard & Poor’s, downgraded Greece’s long-term and short-term debt to non-investment status and cautioned that investors who bought Greek bonds faced dwindling odds of getting their money back if Greece defaulted or went through a debt restructuring. Nach einer Flugzeit von mehr als drei Stunden ist die Falcon 20E um 20.45 Uhr (MESZ) auf ihre Heimatbasis zurückgekehrt. Die Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) sieht die von der Deutschen Flugsicherung (DFS) veranlasste Luftraumsperrung bis zur endgültigen Klärung des Verbleibs der Vulkanasche in der Atmosphäre weiterhin als gerechtfertigt an. Der Pilotenverband stellt klar, dass internationale Regeln keinen Zweifel daran lassen, dass der Luftraum in kontaminierter Umgebung geschlossen bleiben muss.
Um die Computersimulationen der Ascheausbreitung zu überprüfen, sind aus Sicht der VC die Messflüge des Deutschen Zentrums für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) das richtige Instrument. Bis zur Auswertung der dort gewonnenen Parameter sollten die Lufträume für den Flugverkehr gesperrt bleiben. Für die Sicherheit in der aktuellen Situation ist es indes unerheblich, ob ein Flugzeug nach Sicht- oder Instrumentenflugverfahren betrieben wird. „Entweder der Luftraum ist sicher oder er ist es nicht“, so die VC.

Volcanic Ash and Aviation Safety
The ever-growing reliability of the turbojet engines of air transport aircraft today allows twin engine extended range operations globally on routes where previously only three- and four-engine aircraft could travel. Threatening that reliability, however, is a hazard capable of silencing these engines under the worst of conditions—volcanic ash.
There are 1,500 known volcanoes around the world, and 600 of them are currently listed as active. Collectively there are 55 to 60 volcanic eruptions annually, and monitoring records tell us that some of these explosive eruptions are propelling volcanic ash to the thirty- and forty-thousand foot flight levels traveled by the airlines. Commercial aircraft encountering ash spread by such eruptions have experienced multiple engine flameouts.
ALPA Safety, through its Volcanic Ash project under the Air Traffic Services Group, has devoted several years to expanding the database of operationally relevant information on this potential hazard and improving the warning system necessary to reduce unplanned encounters of hazardous ash clouds.
The information under this Banner may be useful toward understanding the hazard; understanding recommended practices for avoidance, if possible; achieving survival in the event of an unexpected encounter; and finally, reporting the experience.

It emerged this weekend that in 1985 when he was in charge of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which deals with sex abuse cases, the pope signed a letter arguing that the “good of the universal church” should be considered against the defrocking of an American priest who committed sex offences against two boys. more...

LOS ANGELES — A powerful earthquake southeast of Tijuana shook Southern California on Sunday afternoon, damaging buildings in northern Mexico and border cities in California and Arizona and rattling a seismically sophisticated population as far north as Los Angeles and Las Vegas. NASA: Solar Cycle Prediction - Sonnen Zyklus Vorhersage

May 29, 2009: An international panel of experts led by NOAA and sponsored by NASA has released a new prediction for the next solar cycle. Solar Cycle 24 will peak, they say, in May 2013 with a below-average number of sunspots.
"If our prediction is correct, Solar Cycle 24 will have a peak sunspot number of 90, the lowest of any cycle since 1928 when Solar Cycle 16 peaked at 78," says panel chairman Doug Biesecker of the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center.
"Even a below-average cycle is capable of producing severe space weather," points out Biesecker. "The great geomagnetic storm of 1859, for instance, occurred during a solar cycle of about the same size we’re predicting for 2013." more...

Die erste und zugleich einzige frei gewählte Volkskammer der DDR konstituiert sich am 5. April 1990 im Palast der Republik. Der 10. Volkskammer gehören - einschließlich der Nachrücker - 409 Abgeordnete an. Nur drei Prozent der Abgeordneten sind auch schon Mitglieder der 9. Volkskammer gewesen. Zu ihrer Präsidentin wählen die Abgeordneten im zweiten Wahlgang die CDU-Abgeordnete Sabine Bergmann-Pohl.
The free elections to the People’s Chamber (Volkskammer) of the German Democratic Republic on 18 March 1990 completely transformed the character of that Parliament. Under the dictatorship of the Socialist Unity Party (SED), the People’s Chamber had been a sham parliament which, with one single exception, had always rubber-stamped the decisions of the state and party leaders until the peaceful revolution in the autumn of 1989. When I am on the way to the Televsion Station in Cologne , I am passing the Souvenir Shop of Rahim. His has a partiality for products "Made in Germany" e.g. Kuckucksuhren (watches)from the Black Forest or Christmas angles from the city of Seiffen in Germany. The shop is near by to the cathedrale in Cologne.
