Das Deutsche Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) hat am 19. April 2010 einen erfolgreichen Messflug zur Vulkanasche-Wolke über Deutschland durchgeführt. Nach einer Flugzeit von mehr als drei Stunden ist die Falcon 20E um 20.45 Uhr (MESZ) auf ihre Heimatbasis zurückgekehrt. Die Flugroute für diesen Messflug führte von Oberpfaffenhofen nach Leipzig, dann über Hamburg nach Bilthoven (Niederlande) und zurück über Stuttgart nach Oberpfaffenhofen.  mehr...

The German Aerospace Center (DLR) completed a successful measurement flight of the volcanic ash cloud over Germany on 19 April 2010. After a flight time lasting more than three hours, the Falcon 20E returned to its home base at 20:45 CEST. The route for this measurement flight led from Oberpfaffenhofen to Leipzig, then over Hamburg and on to Bilthoven (the Netherlands) and returned via Stuttgart to Oberpfaffenhofen.   more...

As the volcano in Iceland continues to spew ash, flights are grounded across large areas of Europe. And if you wonder why such caution is needed, you can ask retired British Airways Captain Eric Moody. In 1982, Captain Moody was flying near Jakarta, Indonesia when volcanic ash caused all four engines on his Boeing 747 to fail. But Captain Moody landed his airplane. He joins us now from Camberley, England.

Die Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) sieht die von der Deutschen Flugsicherung (DFS) veranlasste Luftraumsperrung bis zur endgültigen Klärung des Verbleibs der Vulkanasche in der Atmosphäre weiterhin als gerechtfertigt an. Der Pilotenverband stellt klar, dass internationale Regeln keinen Zweifel daran lassen, dass der Luftraum in kontaminierter Umgebung geschlossen bleiben muss.
Um die Computersimulationen der Ascheausbreitung zu überprüfen, sind aus Sicht der VC die Messflüge des Deutschen Zentrums für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) das richtige Instrument. Bis zur Auswertung der dort gewonnenen Parameter sollten die Lufträume für den Flugverkehr gesperrt bleiben. Für die Sicherheit in der aktuellen Situation ist es indes unerheblich, ob ein Flugzeug nach Sicht- oder Instrumentenflugverfahren betrieben wird. „Entweder der Luftraum ist sicher oder er ist es nicht“, so die VC.

Hintergrund:
Was ist das Instrumentenflugverfahren (IFR-Flüge)? Die Lage des Flugzeugs im Raum (Höhe, Flugrichtung, Geschwindigkeit) wird rein nach flugzeugeigenen Instrumenten gesteuert. Der Flug kann auch ohne Sicht nach außen durchgeführt werden. Dieses Verfahren ist das Standardverfahren und wird nahezu bei allen Passagier- und Frachtflügen angewandt.
Was ist das Sichtflugverfahren (VFR-Flüge)? Sichtflugverfahren wird in der privat- und Sportfliegerei angewandt. Das Flugzeug wird nach Sicht nach außen zum Ziel gesteuert.

Volcanic Ash and Aviation Safety

The ever-growing reliability of the turbojet engines of air transport aircraft today allows twin engine extended range operations globally on routes where previously only three- and four-engine aircraft could travel. Threatening that reliability, however, is a hazard capable of silencing these engines under the worst of conditions—volcanic ash.

There are 1,500 known volcanoes around the world, and 600 of them are currently listed as active. Collectively there are 55 to 60 volcanic eruptions annually, and monitoring records tell us that some of these explosive eruptions are propelling volcanic ash to the thirty- and forty-thousand foot flight levels traveled by the airlines. Commercial aircraft encountering ash spread by such eruptions have experienced multiple engine flameouts.

ALPA Safety, through its Volcanic Ash project under the Air Traffic Services Group, has devoted several years to expanding the database of operationally relevant information on this potential hazard and improving the warning system necessary to reduce unplanned encounters of hazardous ash clouds.

The information under this Banner may be useful toward understanding the hazard; understanding recommended practices for avoidance, if possible; achieving survival in the event of an unexpected encounter; and finally, reporting the experience.
